Frequently Asked Questions

General

What is the Unfollowing Institute?

The Unfollowing Institute is an organization dedicated to helping people create meaningful change as they change life chapters. It is a mobile, international school that conducts both virtual and in-person classes.

What is the Unfollowing Process?

The Unfollowing Process is delivered as three in-person, experiential learning programs. The three courses are meant to be taken slowly. Students take each one, when the timing works for them based on their own unique life transition. A private Global Unfollowing Network, made of up students and alumni, support students in-between courses and well beyond the process.

The process is a unique combination of Gestalt, Art, and Somatic therapies along with more traditional “classroom” style learning. Courses and the community are designed to be safe and supportive.

You do not have to think during the Unfollowing Process— the details of every day and every hour of the process is handled by the Instructors so that all you have to do is experience and be present.

What’s the difference between The Unfollowing Process and the virtual prequel class?

The Unfollowing Process is a set of three experience-based learning classes meant to be taken in succession to help you as you change life chapters.

The Virtual Class is a prequel to the process and not based on experiential learning. It’s meant to help you see your inner landscape more clearly and results in a written diagnostic you can use as you enter the Unfollowing Process or/or with the work you do with your psychotherapist or coach.

What is the difference between experiential Learning and Traditional Learning?

Experiential learning is learning by doing. Traditional learning is learning through simulating (thinking).

You can think of it as the difference between reading, talking, or watching something about riding a bike and riding a bike. Experiential learning is powerful because it rewires your brain (Neuroplasticity). The result is that someone who perhaps thought riding a bike was too hard or complicated has a completely new point of view, skills, and consciousness about it after the experience.

Can anyone do the Unfollowing Process?

Anyone who is age 25 or over is welcome to apply. All applicants undergo an interview to determine fit for the program. Once accepted, applicants can sign up for their first course.

Is the Unfollowing Process for me?

Students of all ages over 25, nationalities, genders, cultures, sexual orientations, and spiritual beliefs complete the Unfollowing Process. The things students have in common are a serious commitment to the process and to change.

The Unfollowing appeals to people who are willing to courageously confront the deepest parts of themselves to determine what has been confining their lives.

Is the Unfollowing Process a form of therapy or recovery program?

The Unfollowing Process is an excellent complement as you conduct therapy or recovery programs. It is not a substitute for those things. The Unfollowing Institute supports psychotherapy and other forms of relief as part of our students overall investment in self-care and wellness. If you are currently in a recovery program, we ask you to wait at least three months following that program before attending one of our courses.

Can I take the Unfollowing Process with my partner or friend?

No. Even if you are partnered, this is your journey. We do not allow partners or friends to participate in any of the courses together. The Unfollowing Process relies on you to focus on yourself. Keeping partners and friends out of the same class helps keep outside interpersonal dynamics out of the classroom.

What is the agenda? What exactly happens during the course?

As the process is based on experiential-learning, we don’t share an agenda or syllabus in advance.

Expect your days to be very full and highly structured. Depending on your course, it will include a variety of cognitive, intuitive, and cathartic exercises designed to allow you to view and understand the important factors in your life from a new perspective. You will also learn tools and practices that will support you after the process.

Your course will include presentations and discussions, guided meditations, journaling, cathartic exercises, small group sessions, personal interactions with teachers, and lots of creative expression.

As attendance in your course is small, you can expect to get to know your classmates. While there are group activities and sharing, your deeper work is done independently and/or with your instructor. Instructors will ensure that all students feel comfortable and safe at all times. You do not have to share the content of what you are working on with others, and no matter what you choose, you will feel supported by being in the presence of others who, like you, are committed to their growth and unfollowing.

Every day of every course is different as we take you through the process. The three courses vary in the level of experiential learning. The first course *Dig Deep*, is 90% experiential learning. The second and third course, *Face your World* and *Enter with Purpose* is a more balanced blend of experiential and conventional learning.

Why do you not allow phones, computers, tablets or other electronics during the Unfollowing Process courses?

Experiential learning requires that you be present and focused at all time. This means you will be digitally disconnected from the world during the course.

Telephone calls, emails, and texting are not permitted, as well as connecting to the internet and other “outside” means of communication. Your family will still be able to reach you if there is an emergency.

What languages do the instructors speak?

Western and Eastern locations are taught in English. If you are interested in translation services, please contact us.

What do I bring?

A detailed information packet will be provided for all registered students which details what to bring.

Lodging & Accommodations

Where is the Unfollowing Process held?

The Unfollowing Institute is a mobile school and holds classes globally, in rented facilities. These are often private homes. You can expect a small, quiet, private, and safe location near nature. Expect basic, comfortable, and simple (vs luxury) accommodations. There will be no television, internet, or other electronics allowed.

Will I have my own private room?

Yes. All students have their own bedroom. As we conduct the Courses in homes, bathrooms are not typically one per bedroom.

What kind of meal options are available? Will there be vegetarian or vegan options?

The Unfollowing Institute provides three vegetarian meals per day along with snacks. Students with special dietary needs will have a change to let us know ahead of each course so that they may be accommodated. As our facilities are rented, we do not have the capability to keep a Kosher kitchen.

When will you let me know the exact address?

The address of your course will be sent you along with transportation options/instructions at least 2 weeks before the course.

When should I arrive?

As courses begin at 8am, students who are traveling from out of town should plan to arrive by 7am. This may mean you will need to arrive a day before the course starts. Your registration does not include accommodations which preceded the course.

Can I stay longer at the course location for my two days alone, post-process?

This is not usually possible but please contact us to verify and get more information.

Why do you strongly advise two days alone, post-process?

Students often feel very sensitive after completing their course and want to have longer alone time to synthesize, complete the post-process exercises, and re-orient before entering the ordinary world again. We strongly recommend taking two nights for yourself as a time for quiet integration.
